Leadership and governance
Schools and colleges are complex organisations with large
budgets - similar to many employer organisations. More and more
they are required to act like businesses (see below for the reasons
why), and school leaders are expected to have the necessary skills
to meet these new demands. 
Many head teachers and school/college staff have identified the need for skills previously only found in the business sector, such as budgeting, as well as soft skills like relationship building, networking and the confidence to interact with workforces and organisations both within and beyond the school.
Governors
Many employers employees may find that they can help schools and colleges by becoming govenors. The governing body of a school or college is responsibe for key issues, such as finance, personnel and strategic planning; many governing bodies throughout England are short of people from business backgrounds who can provide help on the issues mentioned above.
There are 350,000 volunteer governor places in England on governing bodies in 23,500 nursery, primary and secondary schools. At any one time, approximately 40,000 of these places will be vacant as volunteers' circumstances change, or their terms of office come to an end.
